CATHY'S BLACK HAIR CARE PRODUCTS HAIR TIPS (PART II)

1. I get my hair done at the Dominican salon every 5-7 days. Is that sufficient enough washing of the hair?

Michelle, getting your hair done at the salon once a week is an okay interval for washing your hair. Do not go longer than one week.

Go Back

2. I use IC Hair Polisher with Aloe Vera to moisturize daily. It is non-greasy. Is that a good moisturizer?

Do not be mislead, IC Hair Polish is NOT a moisturizer - I use hair polish too but the purpose of a hair polish is to smooth the cuticle of the hair. It is not a moisturizer!!

Go Back

3. Is Precise relaxer a good relaxer? I use the regular formula as my hair relaxes very easily. My hairdresser doesn't seem to like Precise. She recommends Cream of Nature and I don't think it straightens the hair enough.

Regarding Precise relaxer - I do not use it and I only recommend Affirm. I also do not use Creme of Nature and I do not recommend anything that I have not used myself.

Whatever chemical you choose, stick with it! Don't allow your hair dresser to change from Precise to Creme of Nature and back and forth to them or other chemicals. Some chemicals do not work together well and could cause you severe breakage problems.

4. I thought IC Hair Polisher was moisturizing my hair because its been so soft. Do I need to use a moisturizer every day or is a deep treat 1x a wk enough?

IC was softening your hairs cuticle not moisturizing it. Hair grease will soften too temporarily but it does not moisturize. I use a hair polish too but only to smooth the cuticle. Protein will make the hair hard and hair polishes will make the cuticle smooth and less tangled. Great product but it does not moisturize. You will still need to moisturize daily. Once a week is not enough when you go to the salon and moisturizing is different than a deep conditioning treatment. You are thirsting for so much knowledge and you will find your answers in the Ultra Black Hair Growth Book!

5. I am a little confused on buying product with protein. I read somewhere that too much protein can cause breakage on people with already dry hair and that protein should only be used after the relaxer. I brought a shampoo for dry damaged hair, with soy protein in it. I am a little scared a use it.

Danielle, remember that much that you read about our hair care is supplied by the industry and can be WRONG! I use protein at least 2-3 times per month. My conditioner has protein in it and I have experienced quite the opposite when the hair is kept moisturized, which actually minimizes breakage!

6. I was interested in buying your Dew. I noticed that the first ingredient is water. Does the Dew make the hair wet? This concerns me because you mentioned that we could use the Dew along with the curling iron for a smoother hair style. If it goes on wet, won't it cause the curling iron to burn the hair? Also, I do not want it to make my hair frizzy.

Danielle, The water is necessary for the moisture. It is not sprayed on to soak the hair, but lightly misted. It should not make your hair frizzy if you don't use too much. As far as using to achieve a smoother hair style, this is done when the hair is dried with the Dew on it then the curling iron straightening technique is used after the hair is dry. On a daily basis, misting the Dew on will be all you do and it does not make the hair "wet" if you use sparingly. You may even find that moisturizing amounts used are less if you use the curling iron straightening technique with the Dew because the hair is softer and smoother to the touch!

7. I am writing you on behalf of my wife, Laurie. I read through your site and testimonials and even Amazon.com reviews of your book and am impressed. For over eleven years I have lived with my wife struggling with extensions. She is a very beautiful woman and I love her. I have seen pictures of her when she was under 19 years of age and all show long hair. At least past the upper back. It seems after around 19 years her hair in the back would not grow anymore. I think she cut it for some styles and never had that length any more. I have ordered your book and would like to help her any way that I can. I don't mind the extensions but I know she is really unhappy with the process. She calls it a "curse". I read to her all the testimonials and reviews. She really doesn't believe anything will work. Can you email an encouraging letter to her. I know an email from you would ignite something in her. I promise to buy your products and keep her motivated. She is 36 years old now and just as beautiful as ever!

Dearest Laurie, For decades black women have lived with lies and myths about our hair care. The professionals we use actually destroy our hair in some cases and are key resources for perpetuating the myths we associate with our hair. I was tired of the confusion and misguidance which is why I decided to research and write the truth about black hair growth and maintenance. The key to identifying hair growth gimmicks is to understand that anybody who is saying "trim the ends for growth" is promoting one. It should be obvious because this ridiculous message has been around for decades and can not possibly work. Know that people who say things like this have done NO research but are only trying to capitalize on the fact that we want long hair. You will never find that message in anything I have written. The people who have given us traditional hair care information has been men and whites. Neither of these groups have ever felt what it is like to crave long hair and be unable to get it. Their solution was wigs, weaves, braids etc. The problem is "I don't want to wear a weave, I want to wear my own hair like most sisters. So the idea had to be conceived by a black women." Although there are a lot of materials written by black women about our hair growth, they all note the "trimming myth" which should be obvious they are "gold digging."

I honestly have never had this much hair in my life and it is due to my research and understanding about our hair. If your problems are dry hair that breaks (aka short hair problems) this will work for you. There are many gimmick surrounding our hair care and I understand why you are skeptical, I was too before I did my research. Now I can tell who is wrong as well as who is just trying to capitalize on our desire to have long hair.

The book that I have written will open your eyes about our hair care and the common sense perspective will soon have you understanding how to correct the problems you have. Please take the time to read the book cover to cover and then make a decision to stick with this system for just 3 months. I believe that if your problems are caused by dryness which is 80% of the black populations problem, this is the last hair account that you will ever need. Email me with any questions as I truly believe that together we can make it happen for you!

8. Assuming I'm using the Ultra Black Hair Conditioner every three days, how long, on average, can I expect it to last?

It is not necessary to use the conditioner every three days because you will probably not deep condition each time. Once a week is sufficient. However, if your hair is in terrible condition, I advise every 3 days to deep condition until it is in better condition. As far as how long it will last depends on how much hair you have, how often you use it and how much you use. Mine lasts me about 1 month used once a week (considering the length of my hair).

9. Other than the Ultra Black Hair Dew, what other moisturizers do you personally use?

Regularly, I use Motions, and All Ways Creme.

5/19 UPDATE I no longer use All Ways- they changed the formula when they changed their label! I threw my bottle out. It no longer contains water and has alcohol and protein. Two ingredients that are terrible for our hair especially in the moisturing stage!

10. How long does it take for the products to arrive? I would opt for US Regular mail and I'm in NC. Does it matter whether I pay by credit card or check?

If you pay by check your order ships 2 weeks later. If by credit card, credit cards are processed electronically and approved response are generally shipped out the next day US Postal Service priority mail which usually takes about 2-3 business days.

11. Is the use of your Ultra Black Hair Conditioner a required part of your maintenance process, or are there other, cheaper conditioners with the same ingredients that I can buy over the counter?

Ultra black hair conditioner is not required however you must pick one as I have specified in the book and as this writing 01/01/02 no conditioner on the market includes all the ingredients of Ultra Black Hair Conditioner. Ultra Black Hair Conditioner is the only conditioner on the market that contains EVERYTHING I talk about in the book! My conditioner was developed strictly because people wanted to use what I use.

12. I have read your book, along with Wanakee's and Paula Begoun's (I am a hair junkie!). I certainly admire the fact that you are a sister out to educate other sisters on a subject that is always a major concern... however, I MUST disagree with you on the trimming issue. Don't get me wrong, your book has excellent tips, but I wholeheartedly believe that trimming the hair keeps it healthy, and therefore aids in not the growth process, but in the quest for longer hair.

Trimming the ends has nothing to do with the health of the of the hair or the growth process. IF you have split ends they can tangle and snag more, causing some breakage. If this is the case then you should have them trimmed. I have since had trims about 3 times this past year since proving my technique and my hair has not gotten longer but shorter as a result of the trims! Also it has not decreased my split ends, I still get them but it does not hinder my hair growth.

Also Wanakee does not have a book, she has a 15 page pamphlet, which obviously does not come close to being classified as a book. (Books have certain criteria - ISBN number, library of congress classification, etc) A few tips at best is all you get with that document as I have read it too! I have people with long hair call me all the time asking me for help in keeping their hair long. Just because a black person has long hair does not necessary mean they know how they got it or can advise others on how to achieve the same! (This statement is not to imply that she does not know, or that she is lying, it is based on people with long hair calling me asking how to keep it long)

Consider this point, when I was pregnant with my first son (25 years ago) my hair grew quite long because I was taking care of it. I could not have told you for the life of me how to grow your hair because I did not really know anything about hair. I could have written a pamphlet back then but it would not have been factual. When I made a stupid move and double processed the hair, I lost it all and could not remember what I did to get it in the first place. Twelve 12 years later only after I researched hair and found out what I can and can not do, revealed why I was able to achieve length again and advise others on how to do it. So keep that in mind when you see someone with long hair trying to tell you how to do it. Just because they have long hair does not necessary mean they can instruct you or anybody else how to achieve the same!

13. Your hair is quite lengthy now, but after 11 years? With 6 inches of growth per year, your hair should be long enough to sit (or step) on!!! Between 1989 and 1994 your hair appears to have grown an inch (just an estimation from the pictures I saw)....?

Your observation is incorrect. My hair grows a little over 5" per year. The reason it is not "long enough for me to sit on" is the fact that all hair has a natural life cycle. Once your hair reaches that, it falls out at the roots and starts over. This process is ongoing and happens all over the head in different places, at different times. This is the technical information that I did not want include in my book because if someone wants to know the technical stuff, there are many books out there that address that. To further illustrate this point, the hair on your legs also has a natural life cycle and if you never shaved your legs, that hair would NOT grow long enough to braid! Get my point? My hair will probably stay this length for the rest of my life, but the point I am trying to make is that I have maintained my hair length for over this time period!

14. No one ever said that trimming the hair makes it grow faster. Trimming simply helps to stave off split ends, and judging by your photos, you had quite a few. Who wants raggedy ends? Contrary to your book, split ends do lead to breakage! The fact that you take great care of your hair probably greatly decreases the chance of the ends splitting too terribly, but it is a disservice to African-American women to tell them never to trim their hair. Check out Wanakee's hair.... After only 4 years, her hair is nearly to her waist - she is doing something right!!! You implied in your book that her hair "didn't look like Type 4 hair to you"--what does that mean? That perhaps she had an easier time growing her hair like that since she wasn't a Type 4? Her hair actually looks coarser than yours to me.

Your comment about "no one ever saying that trimming the hair promotes hair growth" is incorrect, I have researched hair and I have actual articles where HAIRDRESSERS are actually saying those very words!

(Your comment on "my raggedy hair") Yes, you are correct in that my hair was "raggedy" in the picture. The reason I did that was to prove that just because you have "raggedy" ends, my hair DID NOT stop growing as a result of the "raggedy - not trimmed ends." I have since trimmed my ends, as I have obviously proved my point that growth has nothing to do with trimming. You are correct that it does not look nice but I felt the need to prove my point and the only way to do that is to dispel the myths, by letting my hair grow out "ugly".

(Your comment on Wanakee) - Coarseness has nothing to do with the curl pattern of the hair. White people can have course but straight hair. I have Type 4 hair, which is a tight curl pattern. Judging from her pictures, Wanakee has probably Type 3 hair. The tighter the curl pattern, (Type 4) the dryer the hair is. I surmise her hair is "quote" down to her waist because her hair life cycle is perhaps longer than most African-Americans, combined with a looser curl pattern that is not as dry as the majority of the African American population.

15. I received my order today and have completed the book. I wanted to ask about conditioning, you mentioned, when first starting the program, to condition each time you wash your hair, every 3 days. How long should you continue to deep condition this often before going to conditioning once a week. Also, my hair stylist recommends a "treatment about every 6 weeks and when I do go for it, which isn't that often, she uses Aphogee treatment, which I can get from Sally's and do myself. Do you recommend getting a treatment every 6 weeks along with using your program? ?

You can switch to conditioning once a week if you think your hair is in good condition. The treatment your hairdresser is referring to is a "protein treatment" I recommend getting a protein treatment as often as you need them. 6"weeks is a good interval but if your hair is breaking very frequently, you can get them more frequently!

16. I just washed my hair and deep conditioned for 20-30 minutes. I noticed that during rinsing that my hair felt really dry and not soft. I guess I am use to those Cholesterol treatments that only coat the hair. Does the rinsing stage with the UBH conditioner suppose to come out this way? My hair was really tangled also, and I was careful to not move my hair around on my head for just that reason. I know in your book that you say protein is very drying, but needed for the hair. Is it the protein that makes it feel rough? Right after the thorough rinse, I applied the Dew moisturizer. Please let me know if I am doing something wrong.

You are right about the conditioner making your hair hard. Remember that it is the protein, (Aloe Vera in this case) that is required to strengthen. It is the moisturizing that is required to soften it. As far as the tangles, it is good to use a creme rinse. Hair Polishes are also great products to use on relaxed hair to smooth the cuticle. During the middle of the week when you wash your hair, you might just forgo using the conditioner and spray Dew on after washing. Used with a creme rinse/detangler makes your hair feel a lot softer.

After your hair is in good condition, you can certainly alternate between my conditioner and your cholesterol treatments. The conditioner will make it hard and the moisturizer is intended to soften it. You are not doing anything wrong, you are simply noticing something different.

17. I am a 33 year old female and I have been wearing my hair in a single braid weave for quite some time. I have gone to this style because relaxers (of any kind) seem to take out my hair and damage it to a point that it takes years to repair. Now, my hair is dry, but medium length. I have heard of hair texturing, but don't know if that involves a relaxer or not. I do not ever wish to go back to relaxers again. Do you have any suggestions for hair that doesn't take well to relaxers?

Melanie, It is too bad that you have had such bad experiences with relaxers. It was probably because of how it was put on and perhaps how it was maintained. I only wish you had read my book before you had them done then maybe you would not have had such bad experiences.

The texturizer and relaxer are made of basically the same chemicals. The texturizer is just not intended to straighten the hair, but to loosen the curl pattern. If you have had problems with relaxers before, expect the same problems with a texturizer if you do not take care of it.

18. I need to maintain a professional style for work and you are my last resort. I also would like to know if you can refer me to a salon in the Denver area?

My hairdresser is Ed Gillespie at Venus Salon in Denver. I have used him over a year based on the recommendation of a friend. He knows what I want and will not do anything that I do not want done. He listens to your concerns which is a good thing and so many hairdresser do not. (I am correcting him on some things that he has been mislead about - like the split ends thing) Ed is very good and very busy. Give him a call at 303-320-3808 to make an appointment and tell him I sent you.

20. I received your book yesterday and I spent the entire night reading it from end to end. I have to say Bravo to you, it's easy to read and full of common sense information. I'm going to start the process this weekend, I have to purchase a heat cap and I'm ordering your conditioner and mist today. I realize that the way I've been wearing my hair is good. I threw away my brush and I like the wet and spiral curl look which means I will hardly need a curling iron. I use a leave-in moisturizer my sister gave me but it has Alcohol Denat in it ,Seed oil, wheat protein, hydrogenated castor oil and off course other chemicals. But I 'm don't like the fact it has alcohol. What is your opinion on the Alcohol deal?

Good For You on throwing that silly brush away! Forget about achieving any REAL benefits from the leave-in conditioner. At best they will only cosmetically coat your hair. The benefits of a good conditioner needed for our hair must strengthen, lubricate and stimulate. Instant conditioners can not do this because heat is required to penetrate.

I am very cognizant of "alcohol" in my products. Although some "alcohol" in products are fillers, I avoid products that include this ingredient in them like the plague!

21. I'm an African American that has several problems I wish you can help me with. First, my skin. I have problems with oily skin (t-zone), I also have problems with acne brown spots on my face, chest, breast, upper arms and back that embarrasses me terribly. I need help desperately I will be in need of wearing a wedding dress next year and I need help now. Also my hair, I have thin, stringy #2 colored hair that will not relax straight, it has no life, bounce, or body, its short will not grow past a certain point before breaking off again, its dry and when wet its extremely thin and breakable. Also I'm having problems with hangnails badly. I have long nails that break easily when jarred up against something or pop against something if its cold outside. My nail are taking longer to grow since this problem with hangnails have occurred. Do you have any programs that will help with these problems?

Your email was very touching to me. I wish I had all the answers but I do not. I am not a doctor but I will offer as much as I can. I unfortunately can not offer much on your skin condition because I have never researched skin and don't experience the same problems as yourself.

As far as you hair, I think you have misdefined your hair type. Type 2 hair does not experience the drying, breaking problems you are describing. I would like to suggest you have Type 4 hair if you have dry hair that constantly breaks.

To correct your hair problems, reading my book is first and foremost. Then and only then can you begin to correct the problems you have.

To correct your nail problems, use something like Sally Hansen Hard as Nails products. Your nails which are made of the same substance as your hair needs EXTERNAL protein too. I am very active and will work on my son's car (because he does not have money to have it repaired and I have not intentions of giving him money he has not earned) as well as build a pond in my back yard. So needless to say that my nails are not a major concern with me, nor are they long and pretty as a models. When I want to show off my hands, I will use acrylics temporarily just for show. My nails are not the focus of my life as my hair. (which although I will wear fake nails, I will not wear fake hair) I know this does not answer all your questions but I hope it is a start.

22. Hello Cathy, in your book you said don't use instant conditioner only deep conditioners. So are you saying that how to determine the deep conditioners the instructions would say to apply the conditioner with heat, and the instant would say to leave on the hair for so many minutes without heat? Can the instant conditioner be considered as s deep conditioner if we applied heat with it? Please clarify that information for me. by the way did you state you only deep condition your hair once a week or do you deep condition your hair every 3 days, the same as washing? If every three days, would that over condition ones hair??

Lynn, Deep conditioners should provide a benefit for OUR hair. Deep conditioners should PENETRATE, instant conditioners COAT. Deep conditioners for our hair need to provide the benefit of adding strength with protein, plus oils to lubricate and a stimulant. You can find deep conditioners on the market every day that do 1 or 2 of the above mentioned requirements but not all 3 as of this date (01/17/2002) I suspect that the hair care industry will soon jump on the bandwagon in the future but as of this date, there are none that I know of that offer all 3 requirements that I state.

Deep conditioning once a week is adequate. I, like most sisters today are WAAAAAY too busy to perform a deep conditioning every 3 days. But if you have the time, it would be great. Reasonably, do not go longer than 1 week before you deep condition again.

23. Dear Cathy Many thanks for my Ultra black hair products. Because my hair was very badly damaged I had to give it a rest from chemicals and had to wear a wig. I am now trying to grow my hair but I want to be able to color and relax it while using your products. Can you please give me some advice on how I can do this??

Mrs Loyetta, If you choose to color your relaxed hair (I do too since as of December 2001, I am 46 years old - and gray hair is just not appealing or flattering to me right now) use a color that does NOT contain Ammonia OR Peroxide. A product that is mixed with water, like Bigen is the better and is also the product that I use and is not damaging when applied immediately after a chemical (relaxer).

24. I live in England and I have just received the book from Amazon. How much will it cost in post and packaging and approx. how long will the products last if I follow Cathy's system? Finally how long will it take to receive the products and can I purchase the product in England from a supplier?

To obtain the actual costs of shipping the product to England, would require (unfortunately) you going back to the website and placing the order online and stating the method you would like for shipping. Instead of inputting your payment information, select CC via fax. You can then see what the costs are for the method of shipping you choose.

How long will the products last - this depends on how much you use, how often you use it, and how long your hair is. My hair is a little over 18 inches long and the 8 oz conditioner last me about 4-5 applications used a minimum of one time per week.

As far as purchasing the products in England, I currently have 2 ladies considering vending the products. When I secure a vendor in your location it will be on the FAQ section on the site.

25. I just ordered your conditioner today. I was wondering what you meant that my roller set look may change if I use it?

Roller sets generally look best when they are smooth. The conditioner will make your hair quite hard/rough (purposely) until it has been moisturized. Your look will probably change because now with the application of protein your hair cuticle will become course. The conditioner builds on the hair to make it stronger. I have had a couple of sisters comment on the texture after using the conditioner. All that I am saying is you too may experience a different texture than you are currently used to.

26. Dear Cathy, I am writing you thanks to a friend I hadn't seen in years until yesterday. Her hair was always short, no more than three inches long. But when I saw her yesterday, it was touching her shoulders and was shiny and full of body. When I asked her how she did it she said "Cathy Howse." She told me that if I bought your book I could have the same results. I ordered your book the same day (side note: The girl in the bookstore said that someone else had just ordered the same book, so the word is spreading!) and on the advice of my friend I threw out my hair brush. She also told me that you would answer a couple questions I had (she had to run). What can I do for the next 10-14 days till my book arrives to help with the day to day grooming of my hair? Also, what causes sore or painful areas in the scalp? (not scalp burns) I usually get them right in the top of my head. Lastly, can a jar of relaxer lose its ability to straighten over time? I've noticed that my relaxer doesn't seem to straighten my new growth as well as it should. Thanks in advance, Cathy and I plan to send photos of my progress and I will share the good news of you with every black woman that I know!

LaJoyce, When you see your friend again, thank her for sharing this information with you because in time black women around the world will understand the REAL requirements not a bunch of myths and ridiculous methods that obvious have not worked for decades regarding caring for our hair!

Your first question is one that is best answered by the book because it is a regimen that can be followed to success and I must ask that you please be patient as I could not do the system justice by trying to cram a brief outline in this email. It will only confuse you.

As far as what causes the sores on your scalp, will need to be identified by you when you read the book because 9 times out of 10 it is probably being caused by something you are doing wrong!

I don't know what product you are using and I only recommend one relaxer. Sure there are many relaxers on the market but my experience has told me that Affirm is the best and you can not get it yourself if you are not a hairdresser which means you probably are buying some bulk product that I would never approve of anyway.

I regret that I have to put you off, but your questions will be best answered by the book. The UBH Growth II book is the most comprehensive hair care manual in the world on black hair that has ever been written! Please be patient. Once you read the book your eyes will be opened. After reading it, I can more directly answer your questions. Email me after you read it for more direct answers to your questions.

27. Cathy, I visited your website because I am in search of a good moisturizer. I looked on the ingredients of your Dew product and noticed that the first ingredient is water. Now I know that usually the abundance of the ingredients in a product is listed in decreasing amount. Now I think you are right on target with the fact that black hair has little moisture and it is dry. I believe the hair cannot hold very much moisture, but the little that it does hold goes a very long way. I have also heard Andre Walker say that water is the best moisturizer. My point is are you basically selling a bottle of water. Also the cones that are in the product, why did you include those? I have read that if silicone is used a lot it can build up on the hair and have a drying effect. It just seems to me that all black women have to do to achieve this moisture balance that you speak of is to make the hair moist with water and use something that will lock in that moisture, which will more than likely be an oil. I know this system works for you as it is proved by the hair length you have attained, so not trying to knock you.

If you are familiar with hair polish, they include the "cones" as you say. (Cyclomethicone, Dimethicone) The "cones" smooth the cuticle. Very important if you use protein, because protein makes the hair hard IF not moisturized. My Dew is far from being just water because water evaporates leaving your hair unprotected after it dries. In addition to the water in Dew, it contains the "cones" to help smooth the cuticle and oils to help lock in moisture. I have yet to experience the "drying effect" you mention about the use of silicone. My experience with the industry is they really don't address OUR hair the way I approach it. I have even been repeatedly rebuked for my constant use of protein. The excessive use of protein is bad if the proper moisturizing treatments are not performed afterwards. Since 1997 (5 years as of this writing 01/26/02) I have been using Dew on my hair daily in addition to other products with "silicone" in them and perhaps because I am religious about moisturizing, the problem you mention, I have not experienced. Until I experience otherwise, I will continue to use and recommend them!

Also don't believe everything you read because the majority of the stuff out there is written by the industry and I personally do not trust very much of what they have to offer about our hair care since they have missed the boat for decades!

I am now trying to grow my hair but I want to be able to color and relax it while using your products. Can you please give me some advice on how I can do this?

Loyetta, thanks for giving my products a chance. If you relax your hair, ensure that your hairdresser uses the same product on you each time you get a retouch and make sure the color you choose is not an ammonia or peroxide formula. I use Bigen right after my relaxer and it is excellent.

30. I was telling a co-worker about your site and he was skeptical and was wondering why your hair looked so straight. He even said that you may have a softer hair type than mine. However, today I told him about the treatment I give my hair and he asked me to send your page to him because he has a daughter with breaking hair. He was convinced when he saw my hair today looking shiny and soft and I ran my hand over my head and show him that my fingers wasn't greasy. All this and I don't even have the Dew yet. He's very interested now in knowing what you have to say and asked me to email the link to him. I told my mother and a few others as well and now I have to sit here and email the link because they all want it now.

Marva, thanks for testimonial about my products as it is your belief and testimony that is selling others. It is understandable that people are skeptical about this because there is so much ignorance about our hair as well as so many hair growth gimmicks. Thank you for sharing this information with others and thank you for taking a chance and believing!

31. I use Mizani relaxer (or permanent). I go swimming at least two to three times a week. After every swim, I always use a clarifying shampoo to be sure that no chlorine is left in my hair. I also follow the clarifying shampoo with a gentler shampoo. Then I condition my hair and dry my hair with a dome dryer. Every week I deep condition. Does this procedure seem appropriate, or am I in jeopardy of damaging my hair by swimming and using a clarifying shampoo so frequently? My hair seems to be doing just fine, but I didn't know if there were special precautions that I might need to take.

I see no problem with your regimen except that I would give up the second shampoo. The clarifying shampoo is enough shampoo and the deep conditioning treatments you do weekly is obviously the key. The clarifier is stripping your hair but doing the deep conditioner is helping reseal the hair moisture.

32. Hi, Cathy! I just started your program and have read your book a couple of times. I was wondering that instead of using the curling iron to straighten my hair after air drying, is it ok to use a flat iron? I also wanted to thank you for writing a book to teach black women on how to take care of our delicate hair!!!

Adriane Thank you for your wonderful comment about my book and yes, you may use a flat iron as opposed to the curling iron.

33. Cathy, I really enjoyed your book, it's wonderful information. My hair is in a better condition only after two weeks of following your plan. My hair is about two inches past my shoulders right now and I can only imagine what it will be like 6 months from now. My goal is to have it in at about the middle of my back by Christmas. Thank You again I can't say it enough how wonderful your book is and thanks for being so honest and communicating with your black sisters. I have one suggestion. In case people were wondering about a good shampoo, try Hydrology shampoo by Tresemme. It is fantastic and very moisturizing (good, good) and there is a brand for dry and damaged hair.

Francena, thank you for your kind words and the suggestion on the shampoo! I will try it myself based on your recommendation. Also on your comment about having hair in the middle of your back come Xmas: Please keep in mind that all hair has a natural life cycle. Yours may be 6 years, while others may only be 3 years. (I believe mine is 3) If the person with a 6 year natural life cycle grows hair a little over 6 inches per year, without much breakage, they would reach a length of 36 inches of hair. On the other hand if the person with a 3 year natural life cycle only grows 4 inches of hair a year they would have only 12 inches before the hair goes into the resting stage and starts all over again. You are on the right track and I look forward to getting a testimonial from you in the future.

34. I ordered your book yesterday from Amazon.com and I can't wait to get it. The reason I did is because one of the excerpt mentioned a theory I was concerned about. That wetting hair everyday will dry it out. You said water adds moisture and that's what I thought to be true. Well this year I realized that when I let my hair air dry it leaves nice curly spirals waves and if I use gel they are more defined. I do use a relaxer by Creme of Nature but to sport this look I have to wet my hair everyday. I do use a conditioner and anti-frizz serum and the gel is a conditioning gel. What is your opinion? Or what has research proven about this? I definitely want my hair longer, which last year it grow past my shoulders but it was very stringy because of constant blow-drying and I cut it shoulder length to get it back healthy. I also go to a Dominican salon.

Camille, Congratulations on purchasing the ONLY proven black hair growth system and I know that once you get it your eyes will be immediately opened to perhaps things that you used to take for granted and to an instruction that will honestly help you grow your hair longer. I have just being having conversations with another lady that goes to the Dominican salons. Based on her concerns, and your question, this is what I offer.

1. Avoid letting them dry your hair with the blow dryer EVERY week if you are a weekly customer. Yeah it looks nice but you are depleting the moisture that you just put in it by washing it. Your roller set might also change if you decide to use my conditioner - this ladies did, and she just decided to alter how she styles.

2. Washing the hair (wetting) does not dry out the oils, it is what you wash the hair with that dries it out. You will understand why when you get my book.

3. Creme of nature is okay if you like it and you do not allow the hair dresser to switch back and forth with chemical products on your hair.

4. Anti-frizz serum, aka hair polish is a wonder invention and I use it to smooth my hair too.

5. Gels should be used only when you are willing to wash your hair within the next couple of days because they generally contain alcohol and aid in drying our already hair.

35. I have just ordered your book, and I need a little advise to get started on the right track. Due to the fact that I have been wearing weave bonded into my hair, it has broken off in several places and is very uneven and of course, very dry. I know that you do not believe in trimming or cutting hair, but due to the fact my hair is so uneven, is it a good idea for me to get a good hair cut so that my hair may grow evenly; or should I try wearing artificial buns and ponytails and let my hair grow from there? I look forward to your advice and I cannot wait to start your program. It is a blessing to find someone who truly understands Black hair.

Jacquie, I too am happy that you found this book and trust it will give your longest length ever. I am so sorry you had the problem with the bonding of your weaves, in fact I tell everybody that if you want to wear a weave under NO circumstances should you use that silly bonding glue! I guess this message comes a little too late for you. I am only opposed to trimming if it is supposed to come every six weeks with the intent of making the hair grow. I certainly agree with doing it to EVEN your hair out. Go ahead and have your hair evened out. You can start growing from there and I think you will be much happier. Please keep in touch and let me know how you progress. I would love to hear from you.

36. Hello Cathy first I want to say that I have your book and have read it a trillion times. It has very valuable information in it that I did not know and opened eyes to a lot of things like you said really is common sense. Also I have figured out why for many years I had no success because of what I was doing wrong. Thank You! Also I have a question just to see what you think I should do. I am currently pregnant in the last trimester and during the time of being this way I tried not to put too many chemicals in it out of fear that my hair would fall out. Do you think its ok to get a relaxer application during this time? Because I have gone so long without one my hair has grown a tremendous amount but lately I have started to notice a small amount of breakage not too bad where I would have to get it cut but I don't want it to get to that point I know its because of the different hair textures from not having it touched up in awhile. Do you think its ok for me to touch up the roots or should I just get a braided hair style until after my baby is born. I have came so far with my journey and I hate to have to start from square one.

Angal, Thank your for the compliment on my book. I am glad you found it helpful! Relaxers during pregnancy have no affect on the pregnancy. If a chemical was being absorbed quickly into your head such as a relaxer then we'd all be in trouble. Unless you are experiencing some hormonal imbalance then your hair SHOULD NOT fall out with a retouch just because you are pregnant!

It could fall out if you go to a hairdresser that does the wrong thing like put a different chemical on than you are used to using on your hair! It could fall out if you neglect it after you have it done. It could fall out if you already have permanent color put on your hair with an ammonia base or peroxide and then apply the relaxer. It is not the relaxer that will cause the problems unless you have a hormonal imbalance that could cause a problem which is probably unlikely. If your hair is healthy and maintained as I believe you have, you should have no problems!

37. I just wanted your opinion on sleeping in rollers. I don't do it, but a good friend of mine does and I wanted to know if it was okay? I usually roll my hair when I get home in the afternoon and by bedtime I remove them and tie my hair up with a scarf. Thanks for everything that your doing to keep hair on black women's heads. I'm using your information on my two year olds head (NO BRUSHES) and her hair is looking great! Thanks to you, she will have the healthy, long hair that most black women long for.

LaJoyce, good job on getting rid of the brushes on your daughters hair and you are right, she will grow up knowing how to care for her hair thanks to you.

I do not sleep in rollers because I cant stand them poking me in the head while I sleep. The only rollers I use if any (from time to time) are the long rods you put in your hair to produce ringlets. There is nothing wrong with using the ones you sleep on if you take care of the hair while it is on them. If the hair is not used with end papers, you increase dryness to the hair simply because of the nature of the device (a sponge).

38. Dear Cathy, I purchased your book yesterday because I have very dry coarse hair that seems to suck up oils and moisturizers. Until I receive the book, can you tell me if there's a gel for styling that you recommend when I want to wear a pony tail style? The protein styling gels seems to dry my hair out even worst. Also, I was able to have a lot of questions answered from the tips you give others and I can't wait to read this book. It seems finally someone found the answer. I used the Break Thru and it made my hair stiff. Right now I'm using Elaster QP Recovery Oil Moisturizer and it is doing a little better and it's not so oily.

Marva, Thanks for purchasing my book. After you read it your eyes will be immediately opened! May I ask why you want a gel when you wear your hair in a ponytail? I don't use gel (currently) so I really cant tell you a good one to purchase. When you get my book, you will understand why protein maintenance products are not recommended.

Marva, the hair care industry was so lacking with accurate hair care information so in my opinion is a message from God and I am just the carrier. Thank Him for letting you find it, and for him letting me carry the message. If you have read my product reviews page, Break Thru made my hair stiff too and I do not recommend its use! Elaster QP is not a product I have used and I do not recommend anything that I have not used myself.

39. I am scheduled for a re-touch tomorrow. I meant to ask before now how to prepare my hair for a retouch. I am tender-headed and the only product that works for me is Affirm Relaxer. Will any such preparation the day before irritate my scalp? I thought I read in your book something about you taking preventive measures to minimize the drying effects of relaxers.

Preparing your hair for a retouch - I do the following. About 2 weeks before a retouch I ensure I am deep conditioning and if there is too much breakage, I will do protein treatments. The day I go for the retouch, and the day before, I put a creme moisturizer on my hair and especially the ends to make them soft. I also do not exercise for 24 hours before the retouch as the pores are opened to sweat and burning of the scalp can occur.

To minimize the drying effects of a relaxer comes AFTER the relaxer - not before- (If I retouch at home) Normally after my retouch (which is usually on the weekend) I do not style may hair with heat at all for about the next 3-4 days. (no blow dryers, curling irons etc.) I apply a creme moisturizer constantly depending on how dry my hair feels. (If I retouch at the salon) I may or may not choose to have it styled (you know they use heat) If they style, the next week I moisturize daily with the Dew, but when I wash my hair as I normally would on Wednesday and the weekend, I deep condition both days, followed by excess moisturizers, depending on how dry my hair feels.

40. My hair is in such bad condition, that I am ashamed to go into a beauty salon for service. I'm losing my hair in the top and thinning on the sides. I have considered going to a beauty college for the sole purpose of learning how to take care of my own hair. In my opinion, a woman's hair is her glory (although this my be a shallow statement) and is linked to her self esteem. My question is: Does your book address balding in women? Will using the information in your book help me to re-grow hair in the balding and thinning areas? I have already ordered your book in the hopes that it will help me with my problem and even if it doesn't I'm planning to share the information with other family members.

This book will help you IF-your problems are caused by abusive techniques you have done to your hair, lack of knowledge, and dry hair that breaks. If this book does nothing else it will open your eyes and you cant get this information in beauty college. Balding can come from a number or reasons from braids being worn too tight, improper chemical applications to heredity. After you read the book you should be able to identify possible causes of your problem.

41. I just ordered your book on yesterday. If you don't mind, would you please tell me why you don't suggest using grease on the scalp? Also, what are the pros and/or cons of oil sheen? And after nearly two weeks without using my hair brush, I find that I have MUCH LESS hair in my comb. Thanks and I can't wait to get your book!

Why not use hair grease on the scalp? The scalp is not the problem, the hair ends are. The sebaceous glands work on the scalp producing oil, so your efforts are concentrated in the wrong place when you focus on the scalp with oils.

Oil sheens, I do not use but I do use hair polish. Hair polish is a cuticle smoother and is very instrumental in smoothing the hair shaft and ends. Very good when the ends are split but do not need trimming just yet.

BTW, good job on giving up the brush. The book will open your eyes!

42. I did actually receive my book the same day I emailed you. I also read it from beginning to end. It's a great book with truthful information. I was told years ago that you did not have to clip your ends for your hair to grow. A hairdresser actually told me that... can you believe it?

Question: I'm really tired of relaxing my hair. Do you have any suggestions on how I might be able to grow it out naturally after the relaxer without massive breakage?

Kewanna, thanks for the compliment on my book. Funny that some hairdressers know this while others are clueless! If, (and when because some day I probably will go back to natural) I would opt for twisting my hair. There are many great styles for twisted hair. My recommendation would be to wash and condition your hair as I recommend in the book, and twist it while it is wet. When it dries, I would opt for wearing the twist or untwist for a buzzed out curly style. I also would still opt for using the curling iron straightening technique with the Dew to obtain a temporary straight style.

43. I'm 35 years old and my hair looks like a 70 year or older persons hair with bald thin edges; I used to have very nice hair of course when I was younger but, now it's very bald and thin at the edges. very thin. What can you do to help ?? Right now, I'm braiding my natural hair up underneath a wig because I'm too embarrassed to wear my own hair. This has been going on for at least 10 years. There was surely perm & coloring damaged throughout the years to my hair.

There can be many reasons your hair is thin and balding aside from heredity it could be one or more of the following reasons: brushing, misapplied chemicals, hair pulled tightly from braids, finally heredity. Does your Mother have the same issues? Heredity you can't change but abusive techniques you use when caring for your hair, you can. If you have not read my book I would recommend you do so. You may find that many of the problems you have caused yourself!

44. Something went wrong. I used the conditioner and my hair feels rough and its not shiny. Also when the hairdresser took out the rollers I felt the hair and it was just coming out! Also the conditioner you couldn't even see when put on and she used a lot. Why is my hair worse off now?

Dear Michelle, The purpose of the conditioner is to strengthen the hair. Protein hardens the hair and it must be softened. Thus the reason I prefer to dry under the dryer then use the curling iron straightening technique for a smoother style. The cuticle is a lot smoother this way. I also put hair polish on my hair to assist with the smoothing of the cuticle which causes the hair to lay day and prevents snarls and tangles when combed (dry).

The style you choose to wear is different now because of the protein conditioner. Do not comb the hair wet please if your hair is damaged! I am not sure why your hair would come out just to the touch because protein strengthens the hair and very little hair is lost after an application of protein unless it is stressed beyond its tensile strength and is weak in the first place.

You don't need to see the conditioner on the hair you can feel it stimulating and feel when it is applied.

May I suggest a creme rinse be used after the conditioner to help smooth the cuticle. You will probably like it better then. Right now your hair is different than before because of the new way it is being "treated."

45. I want to be good and sure I follow your program. Concerning the Dew and creme moisturizers; Do I use one or the other or can I use both? By the way, I love feeling the Conditioner tingle on my scalp. Is this the stimulating action you speak about in your book?

Olanre, You can use both a creme and the DEW, I do. Dew does not (purposely) have a lot of oil. Sometimes we need oil especially around retouch time.

Yes, the conditioner tingling you feel is what I mention in the book.

46. Hello Ms. Howse I am Quanisha Smith a 17 year-old African American girl. All my life I have had short hair, and for about 16 years I have worn extensions off and on. During my period with braids my hair would grow a lot, but it will break off as soon as I got a relaxer because I didn't know how to take care of my hair. Thank you for your book. I cut my hair this August to about the middle of my ear in the back and the bottom of my hair in the front before I begin your hair care system. I guess I did this because I wanted a fresh start. Using your system my hair has become much much thicker. My edges were almost bald from years of braiding, and now they are very thick. You would have never thought I almost had no edges at one point. From September to Now, January my hair has grown about an inch and a half. I haven't used your conditioners yet, because I thought I have found sufficient conditioners in a store. I have used IC (inter cellular) deep penetrating creme moisturizer for extra dry hair and scalp with aloe and vitamin, Motions at home hair lotion Oil Moisturizer, Suave coconut Shampoo with wheat protein and Suave daily clarifying conditioner from Sept. to DEC. Now I have changed these products because I found that Suave Shampoo dried my hair badly during shampooing and the daily clarifying conditioner only detangled and softened my hair. Now I am trying Soft Sheen's Optimum Care Rich Conditioner with vitamins, proteins and 14 conditioners (Can also be used as a deep conditioner) and Collagen Moisture Shampoo with natural proteins and Aloe Vera. Also I am going to use Infusium 23 leave in treatment for damaged/ unmanageable hair. I brought John Freida Frizz-Ease Relax for chemically treated hair which smoothes new growth to lengthen the times between relaxers however its a blow drying straightening creme. Also I brought the Relax balm, that also smoothes new growth with a hot-iron or blow dryer.

The reason I am sending you this e-mail is because, I want to know if you had any experience or testimonies about these products? Also, my ends look just like my roots when its time for a touch-up. I go to a boarding prep school, so during my 1-month Christmas break, I left my bonnet dryer at school. For a whole month my hair was not deep conditioned, just instant conditioned with Suave and I permed my new growth. I noticed then and now that my hair is breaking off not from the roots whenever I comb or put my hands through it and my ends are really puffy and shaggy. I was thinking of getting my ends clipped, but I know you said No trimming. When I finally deep conditioned with IC my hair didn't shed while styling, but it started up again after a day or two. Please help me with that problem.

I am a dancer and an athlete, so I sweat a lot. My hair gets really dry. I don't want to wash it everyday because I don't have the time to curl it with the curling iron and blow dry it everyday (is that recommended?) I know you said air-drying is best, but my hair looks like a giant puff ball when it dries although I use the Motions moisturizer after conditioning. When you said wash it everyday, I did. But I found that I couldn't find a hairstyle that looked good without the curling iron. Some Internet sites said to just rinse the hair but condition it as usual. Should i follow their advice? On your web site you explained that you are also an active person, so do you wash your hair everyday? If so, do you curl it with a curling iron everyday?

Please when you find time, please help me with these problems and help me find some alternatives to curling my hair everyday so I don't reverse in the steps I've taken.
Quanisha, Your hair care concerns are just like mine when I was 17. I wanted long hair so bad but braids and extensions were not very prominent in 1973. We had the "fake pony tail", "afro puffs" and wigs.

I am glad that you have recognized that YOUR hair is breaking instead of not growing. This is very typical for most African American women because we have NEVER been given accurate information about our hair care until 1990 when my first book came out. So we are WAAAAAY behind about OUR proper hair care. Congratulations on finding my system and achieving much thicker hair and improving the hair on the sides of your head!

Your product selection is questionable, so therefore I will give my comments based on what I know about - I do not know anything about IC moisturizer so I will not comment on it. Motion is a great creme and I use it myself.

Suave is a Definite NO NO and is one product that I do not use (did in the past but will NOT use again because it caused may hair to dry out even though it said on the label it was for "dry damaged hair." Stay clear of this name at all cost because it is not a good product for our dry hair! (White Rain is another product I totally avoid for the same reasons!

Suave Daily clarifying conditioner - don't know what they are trying to do but clarifiers are strippers and should not be used as a Daily conditioner because we need moisturizers not a daily "stripper"

Use the conditioners you have mentioned only if they are benefiting you and you know what the benefits are from having read my book. If they are not doing what I recommend, perhaps you have the wrong conditioner!

Get rid of the Infusium 23 as a daily moisturizer, it is a protein product and will make your hair hard. A daily moisturizer should make your hair soft after a protein conditioner. Poor choice for a daily moisturizer.

The only John Freida product I use is the "texture correcting serum" which is basically a hair polish that smoothes the cuticle. Don't know about other products of his and will not recommend anything that I have not tried myself!

Never go more than 1 week without a deep conditioning treatment - this is the only way our dry hair can lock in the moisture we need so badly and Suave is one of the worst products you could have used. Not only was it bad for your hair, it served no benefit at all! You noticed the breaking because it did not condition your hair.

I do not say NO TRIMS, I say do not trim to think it assists in hair growth. Trimming to make the hair look neater is up to you. I personally had a total of 3 trims in 2001 but strictly for cosmetic reasons. Before 2001 for 11 years I NEVER had my hair trimmed just to prove a point! I feel I have proven my point about not trimming to achieve hair growth. So now I have my hair trimmed for hair shows etc. Trimming to keep the hair from "splitting" up the hair shaft is ridiculous and CAN NOT possibly happen to EVERY hair on your head because the hair shaft is like roofing shingle and IF your entire head is prone to split EVERY hair up the shaft you may as well shave it all off and start all over because your hair is in such bad shape that NOTHING will help you even trims. Besides splitting can occur at any point in the hair shaft. If your hairdresser finds a split hair in the middle of your hair shaft, are you going to let them CUT 3-5" off. ABSOLUTELY NOT. Use trims ONLY if you want the style to look neat, have them done for no other reason!

With the IC (based on what you have told me) it is a protein and should not be used daily to moisturize!

Washing every day is a personal choice and will not hurt your hair if the proper products are used afterwards. I just do not have the time to do it and it is not a requirement for long hair.

Your comment is cute about the "giant puff ball" I find that because my hair is so long now that if I am in a hurry my option is the "dome type hairdryer" (not the bonnet) With the dome type hair dryer, I go under it after I wash and smooth it with my hands while it is drying. I also apply the Dew after washing before I dry because it contains cuticle smoothing ingredients in addition to moisturizing abilities. BTW, I NEVER said wash it everyday! That would be tooooo time consuming for my busy schedule. I say wash the hair every 3 days. I wash my own hair on Wednesday and on the weekend.

If you are asking for my advice you will IGNORE the OTHER internet sites because if they were able to help you, there would be no need for my research or book and you should be sending them an email to them instead of me if their advice was of any real benefit.

NO I do not wash my hair EVERY DAY which means I do not use the curling iron every day.

Shewwwww, this is all I can offer. Your questions are very valid and I only wish the internet and a true hair care system for black women had been around in the 70's, then I would not have had to find the correct answers on my own. You could take the guesswork out of your hair care if you use my products. I only develop products because the hair care industry has neglected to addressed our real needs. Looking for products already in the industry are a chore and I wish you the best with finding something comparable. Continued success!

47. How can I identify hair growth gimmick?

Hair growth gimmicks have been around for decades. Because we spend 3-4 more per capita on our hair, everybody wants that money. There may be one or more of these qualifiers in their message. Here are the ones I am familiar with:

1. If the person in the picture does not look like you (Caucasian, Spanish, etc) and they are marketing to you, it is a gimmick.

2. If they are using children with long hair in the advertisements and the children are biracial (Madame Walker used this gimmick with May a biracial child with long hair to sell her products), it is a gimmick.

3. If the website looks hokey and the person claims to be a professional in some capacity, it is a gimmick.

4. If they can only produce very few made up "testimonials" of other's successes, it is a gimmick.

5. If they are marketing a product alone without an accurate instruction, it is a gimmick.

6. If the website is up for years and never changes, it is a gimmick.

7. If the method mentions trimming the hair as a requirement to make the hair grow, it is a gimmick.

8. If the person is a known wig wearer, it is a gimmick.

9. If they are marketing an internal treatment alone (aka hair vitamins), it is a gimmick.

10. The testimonials can not really be verified as real letters. (aka a real email address, real signed letter, real customer name, city and state, it is a gimmick.

11. If the company offers a product line with a bunch of products you can buy cheaper at the local store and the product line contains grease with vitamins in it, it is a gimmick.

12. If a website offers a “downloadable book” only available on the website and steals the very words from my book and website like “common sense” and “proven system for growing hair”. There are no before pictures and the pictures on the website look like fake hair. They claim some “break through system” that was just developed in 2004 when it steals the very words from my literature that was written in 1989. And the testimonies are typed in HTML as opposed to REAL testimonies. They claim to have done some research but it is obvious that the only research they did was on my website and in my book! It is a gimmick.

These are the ones I can think of at this time but as new ones pop up I will update this list.

48. Cathy, when I first called I got to talk to you, now I get an answering service. How can I talk to you again?

Numerous calls have required that I have someone else answer my calls now. Guess you can say it is "growing pains." I also travel with my business, I can not often be there for every questions when customers think their need is more important than my running the business. Also it is not possible to be a personal hair consultant for everyone. I certainly understand that there are many questions that people think I am the only one that can answer but talking to everyone personally is very time consuming. It was getting to the point where I would get stuck on calls lasting over 20 minutes, which is really not a good use of my time in the middle of the day. I want to help but your email questions are better for me because I can answer them when I have time, then I can publish your questions on the website for others to benefit. My 1-800 number is for orders only.

Regretfully it has gotten to the point where I can not take your personal calls. Preferably if the questions are about hair care concerns, please email them to me at mail@ubhpublications.com then I will do my best to respond as quickly as I can, depending on the complexity of your request and the length of your email. Long exhaustive emails are pushed to the bottom of the pile as they have to be disected in most cases to find out what is really being said.

Also if you are uncomfortable giving your credit card information to someone other than myself, fax me your request @ 303-758-6592 and I will handle it. I am usually not away from the office for more that 3 days. Keep in mind that if I do not respond immediately, the fax machine is in a different location than I am and I will support your request when I return.
